Below mentioned are some sites included in the Sri Lanka Ramayana Yatra package and their significance associated with Ramayana;
Koneswaram temple – The Temple of the Thousand Pillars and Dakshina-Then Kailasam is a classical-medieval Hindu temple located high above the bay. The temple is one of the "Pancha Ishwarams" (Abode of Shiva)
The Hakgala Botanical Garden (Ashok Vatika): When Ravana abducted Sita, he kept her at this place, insisting that she marry him. It was here where Hanuman brought her lord Rama’s ring with the news that he was looking for her. He offered to take her back, but she denied saying it would be an insult to Rama’s honour if he did so.
Seetha Amman Temple, Seetha Eliya: The stream that runs from the hill catered to the day-to-day needs of Sita during her exile at Ashoka Vatika. She used to take a bath in this stream. Now there is also a temple of Rama Parivar by the side of this stream. It is interesting to note that footprints akin to Lord Hanumans are found by this river -some small and some large.
Divurmpola: When Rama killed Ravana and liberated Sita, many people questioned her purity, and this is where she gave Agni Pariksha- a test to prove her chastity by offering herself to the fire. However, she came unscathed and proved her holiness during this ritual at this place.
Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple, Ramboda: Hanuman was searching for Sita on these hills of Ramboda, therefore the Chinmaya Mission of Sri Lanka built this temple with Hanuman as the main deity. Special Poojas are conducted on every full moon.
Gayathri Pedam:- This is where Meghnath, Ravana’s son, propitiated Lord Shiva with penance and poojas and was granted extraordinary powers by lord Shiva.
Kelaniya Temple:- After King Ravana’s death, Ravana’s brother Vibhishana was coroneted as the king of Lanka by Lakshmana at Kelaniya.
Panchamuga Anjaneyar Temple:- This is the temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman and the only temple in the world to have a chariot of Anjaneyar.
Muneswaram Temple is the first temple for Shiva (Munnu + Eshwaran). A Shiva lingam was already built here when lord Rama visited the place. So it is believed that this temple was here even before the Ramayana, this means a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was already existing here before Rama’s penance.
Manavari Temple: Manavari is the first lingam installed and prayed to by Lord Rama, also called Ramalinga Shivan. Rama installed his 1st lingam for Shiva at Manavari, about 5 km from Munneswaram, near the banks of Deduru Oya. The lingams followed this at Thiru Koneshwaram in Trincomalee, Thiru Ketheeshwaram near Mannar, and Rameshwaram in India. These Tamil Ishwaram temples are traditional places of Shiva worship but are also dedicated to Vishnu’s Avatar, Lord Rama.
